History of Bowali

The history of Bowali is primarily attached with Mondal Family. According to some literatures, the Mondals of Bowali were the Roys. During the end of 16th century, the grandson of Basudev Roy got the title of Mondal. The grandson of Shovaram, Rajaram was the army head of the King of Hijli. The King was very impressed with his bravery and thus, he offered him the ownership of 50 villages. Thereafter, the Mondal family settled in Bowali, which confirmed their dominance in that region especially during 1710. The family prospered under Rajaram's grandson Haradhan, who benefited from the patronage of East India Company. During his reigns, he built many temples, which was followed by his seven sons. Consequently, the non-descript village of Bowali was converted into a temple town.

The small town of Bowali has a large amount of historical and spiritual tourist attractions. It attracts worldwide visitors with its towering temples, which display the majesty of colonial mansion comprising of landscaped garden and statues of Italian marble with a water turret. Of these beautiful temples, the Gopinath Temple is probably the most visited spiritual place in the region. Built in Nabaratna style, the temple was established by Manik Mondal in the year 1796. The Ghat is a fifteen minute walk from the Gopinath Temple Complex and the water of the pond is now bordered by water hyacinth. Both the Water Folly and the Ghat represent the historical glory of Bowali.
